Navigating turbulent times

Flexibility, efficiency and gratitude are all in your control in a volatile world

With aggressive moves to reverse illegal immigration, new tariffs and significant cuts to the federal workforce, it is a time of major changes in the global and US economy. In times of uncertainty consumer spending typically drops, which could lead to less spending on landscaping projects. Below we include a few suggestions on things to keep in mind as you manage your business through 2025 and beyond.

Increase flexibility

Consider the products and services that you offer: could you deliver the same output on more flexible terms to your customer? If you are in the design and build business, examples of this may include partnering with a financing organization to offer Buy Now, Pay Later options for hardscape projects. If you are mainly focused on maintenance, consider offering packages versus annual maintenance contracts. The key is to turn what seems like a big commitment by customer, into a smaller more digestible commitment.

Efficiency is key

During this time it is extremely important to be aware of your costs. Are you making money on those jobs that you have to drive several miles to? Did doing that one time job really lead to an ongoing client? Also carefully consider how much you can digitize: for example with software like Duranta you can eliminate truck rolls and be the first to create an estimate for a customer.

Show gratitude to your team

Even if deportations are not a concern for your specific organization, there are concerns that it might generally reduce the size of your labor pool. This makes it especially important to exhibit strong leadership and keep your team motivated. Showing gratitude can cost very little but will go a long way to keeping your team motivated.

Most of all, remember the famous quote from Jeff Bezos which is to focus on what won’t change. Customers will continue to care about having excellent service at a reasonable price, and especially so in uncertain times.
