Tony's Keys to Success from 25 Years in Business

Pro Edge Lawn Care is one of the longest running lawn care and landscaping businesses in Ohio, and a big part of its success is due to it’s founder and CEO, Tony’s, business leadership. In this article, Tony shares some of his learnings from running Pro Edge for over 25 years.

Background

Tony grew up in Toledo, Ohio where he attended the University of Toledo, earning a bachelor’s degree in business. Originally a way to make extra income during the summers, upon graduating Tony decided to go full time into the landscaping business in 2004. Since then Tony has stewarded his company into a premier servicer of commercial landscaping properties in Ohio. Pro Edge Lawn Care has been a Duranta customer since early 2025 and uses Duranta for creating snow and ice management estimates.

What are key difference between residential and commercial sales?

“In residential sales, you can assume that you are speaking to the decision maker. In commercial, it is critical to make sure that you are talking to the right person. When someone contacts our office, I like to find out how they heard of us, and what the role of the person in the organization is. We offer an excellent service, and as such we are not going to be the cheapest solution in the market. So, it is important to meet and build a relationship with the decision maker, which I have been doing for over 25 years”

What do you do after you meet the decision maker?

“In commercial landscaping & winter maintenance, I like to walk the property with the prospective customer. We want to better understand the scope of work. Scope of work is important for all landscaping, but it is especially critical in snow and ice management: for most of our customers making sure that passageways are clear and safe for their staff and their clients is critical. We may have to apply extra materials and hand shovel entrances, versus the general lot.

There are other details that you get from walking a property: these are the details that help us provide an exceptional service. For example, the facility manager doesn’t have time to walk their grounds as often as you’d think, this walk helps to 'jog' their memory of possible problem areas, especially for winter services.  Likely drift areas, pooling of water that will re-freeze, and confirming push points to pile snow. "

What are the keys to success over 25 years?

“Great service and deep relationships.”

Thank you Tony!
